Manuel is 58. He has been out of work for a long time, though now and then he gets the chance to look after a ranch. What little he earns goes on getting by and on caring for his elderly mother.

He showed signs of malnutrition, along with chronic periodontal problems (purulent infection and extreme tooth mobility), bone loss and heavy bleeding.

All the teeth he still had were extracted and his gums were restored through periodontal treatment. He had never had access to health care, and he had never thought of professional dental treatment, let alone of being able to chew again.
