Victoria is 84. Her first job, while she was still a girl, was alongside her father in the cotton fields of Acajutla, in Sonsonate. After that she spent her life planting and harvesting maize and beans and raising chickens. “The machete and extreme work was my life,” she says.

She now helps look after a ranch, though advanced arthritis makes moving around extremely difficult, and her sight has begun to fail. She lost her permanent teeth at twenty, which set back her development, her nutrition and her diet. The dentures she was wearing were old, broken and in very poor condition.
